Cranking it up and down is easy and sturdy. It has a pin that fits through the top of the pole, and the customer service representative told me it's there to prevent the canopy from accidentally slipping off.

I love the vented canopy. It's great for letting the wind pass through, and it's large enough to block the sun's rays effectively.
